Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is a potentiality that haunts parents and physicians alike. Since the syndrome by definition results in death, the challenge is to identify vulnerable children in time to prevent its occurrence. Drs Spitzer and Fox, who are with a nationally recognized SIDS program at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, offer guidelines for identification and evaluation of at-risk children and encourage physicians to utilize the highly effective and relatively simple technique of home monitoring.
