In the two decades since their discovery, lasers have opened up a whole new world of therapy. The argon laser can photocoagulate proliferating retinal vessels, saving the diabetic from blindness, and the Nd-YAG laser can vaporize obstructing bronchial lesions, sparing the patient conventional surgery. These are but two of many present and potential applications of these versatile devices. After introducing readers to lasers, Drs Beamis and Shapshay concentrate on their area of expertise, use of the Nd-YAG laser in treatment of tracheobronchial disorders.
