In the evaluation of disease, a laboratory test may be ordered for many reasons, eg, to assist in diagnosis, to establish prognosis, to measure disease activity. Some tests have multiple roles. In this article Dr Calabrese discusses the usefulness of several immunologic tests in the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus and provides a flowchart that illustrates their most appropriate application.
