The importance of treating both the aerobic and the anaerobic components of intraabdominal infections has been shown experimentally and clinically. Use of an aminoglycoside plus appropriate antianaerobic agents has proved to be the most consistently effective therapy. Dr Bubrick reviews the literature on this subject and recommends specific antibiotic combinations.
