The common misconception that individuals having sensorineural hearing loss cannot benefit from amplification has kept many persons from receiving the help available. In fact, the vast majority of hearing aid users have a sensorineural—rather than a conductive—hearing loss. For many the hearing impairment is attributed to presbycusis. Physicians should be aware that use of a hearing aid and a few commonsense strategies for overcoming problems in communication can go a long way toward helping many hearing-impaired persons, including those who are older, cope with communication needs of everyday living.
