The screaming child, the exuberant cheerleader, and the patient with acute laryngitis all have voice aberrations. In some cases, intriguing vocal abnormalities may be manifestations of physical or mental problems. This article describes some of the common voice disorders, with emphasis on the physiologic aspects of voice production and descriptions of the vocal sounds characteristic of these disorders.
