Weight reduction, dietary salt restriction, exercise, and psychologic-behavioral treatment should be the foundation stones of hypertension management in the elderly, urges Dr Aagaard in this article. Drug therapy should be used only in selected cases and then only after hygienic measures have been tried. Because of the controversial nature of hypertension management, readers are encouraged to read also the article by Drs Jack Onrot and Alastair J. J. Wood, which begins on page 46.
