Abnormality in standard parameters of liver function or development of frank jaundice in a seriously ill patient is often a reaction to multiple factors not originating in the liver, most importantly uncontrolled infection. Proper management of this syndrome, which Dr Fenster prefers to call “reactive hepatopathy,” involves vigorous treatment of the underlying disease or disorder.
