Urinary tract infections are more frequent in boys than in girls during the first year of life; however, females are more prone to infection thereafter. In fact, statistics show that between 5% and 10% of all girls have at least one urinary tract infection by the age of 18 years. Once infection occurs, how should it be treated and what steps can be taken to prevent recurrence and subsequent renal damage? These questions provide the focus for Dr Cunningham's discussion.
