In the 1970s much of the research in breast cancer treatment focused on use of adjuvant chemotherapy regimens. Although initial reports were encouraging, particularly for women with early disease, analysis of ongoing follow-up studies indicates that more investigation is needed before a single drug or combination regimen can be considered truly effective and safe for routine use in all women with breast cancer. In this review, Dr Carter summarizes findings of the most important adjuvant chemotherapy trials and describes the implications for everyday practice.
