Hemodialysis has become so prevalent a therapeutic modality that most physicians will at some time come in contact with a patient on maintenance hemodialysis. In this article, Dr Mackenzie and coauthors briefly review the principles of hemodialysis. They also discuss newer membrane materials, hemofiltration, and kinetic modeling—advances that allow continued improvement in this therapy for patients with end-stage renal disease.
