In patients experiencing transmural infarction, early reperfusion of the infarct zone offers the best hope of preserving myocardial function. Dr Vetrovec reviews methods of recanalization and details a procedure—intracoronary thrombolysis—that has received much attention and is widely applied, alone or with angioplasty. Intravenous use of streptokinase is also discussed.
