Difficulty in swallowing is a reliable symptom of structural or motor disease of the esophagus. Dr Marshall describes the two-phase mechanism of swallowing and the symptom complexes of disease entities referable to each phase. The specific cause can be determined by means of careful history taking, physical examination, and a variety of imaging techniques.
