Psychiatric symptoms are often the first manifestation of endocrine disorders. Distinguishing the underlying disturbance by the use of physical and mental status examinations is key to effective diagnosis and management. Understanding the use of psychotropic medications in patients with endocrine disorders is equally important to avoid unnecessary complications. Drs Peterson and O'Shanick discuss which psychiatric symptoms are commonly seen in these patients, how these symptoms differ from purely functional psychiatric disturbances, and how patients with such symptoms should be treated.
