Prophylactic use of anticoagulants is often appropriate in patients with cardiac disorders. Risk of thromboembolism is increased, for example, in valvular heart disease and coronary artery disease. Dr Genton presents guidelines for use of anticoagulants in both prevention and treatment of these and other thrombosis-prone cardiac conditions.
