So many antihypertensive drugs have been introduced in recent years that the physician looking for the best agent or combination of agents to treat a particular patient may well be perplexed. Dr Frohlich draws on his research and clinical experience to lend perspective on the five, and perhaps six, classes of agents used in antihypertensive therapy. After discussing concepts of the mechanisms underlying these drug effects and side effects, he considers each class in turn, with emphasis on drugs that have recently been or are soon to be introduced.
