Attempts at treating cancer began in ancient times with trials of a variety of potential remedies. Rapid progress has been made in modern times, particularly since World War II, and the goal of therapy has shifted from palliation to cure. In this article Dr Kardinal places the development of cancer chemotherapy in historical perspective.
