Given the cost of medical care today, it only makes sense for physicians to guard against adding unwarranted expenses to a patient's hospital or nursing home bill. Yet, according to Dr De-Lisa and Ms Mikulic, “many physicians are unfamiliar with the pathophysiology and preventive management” of pressure ulcers, a preventable complication that drives “nursing costs up by as much as 50%.” The undue suffering of the patient goes without saying. In this article, the authors delineate the etiology of pressure ulcers, aids and measures that can be used to prevent them, and modes of treatment.
