Asymptomatic hyperuricemia is a laboratory finding, not a disease. In this article, Dr Littman reviews the risks of articular gout, tophaceous gout, renal stones, or renal failure developing in a patient with hyperuricemia and finds little support for the contention that treatment to lower the serum uric acid level is necessary in this situation. Additionally, as he points out, such treatment is in itself costly and associated with risk.
