When a patient coughs up blood, both patient and physician are likely to be alarmed. Most often, however, the cause is an easily treated inflammatory disease. A chest film and, when indicated, bronchoscopic examination are of primary importance in diagnosis and treatment. Massive, life-threatening hemoptysis is difficult to manage but fortunately rare.
