Abstract
Patients participating in hiking, rafting, sailing, and other activities far from medical resources are coming to primary care physicians in increasing numbers for travel advice and drug prescription. Part 1 of this three-part series is intended to familiarize physicians with important principles for the practice of preventive health in the “wilds.” Part 2, to appear in the July issue, discusses field management of injuries and illness, and part 3, to appear in August, gives suggestions for items to include in a wilderness travel medical kit.
