Surgery is no longer necessary in all patients who require drainage procedures. Fluoroscopically guided, percutaneously inserted drainage catheters can be used in selected patients to relieve biliary or urinary tract obstruction and evacuate abdominal abscesses. The authors review the most common of these procedures, emphasizing patient selection and follow-up care.
