The emaciated appearance of many cancer patients is disquieting for their physicians and family. Cachexia is difficult to treat, and many patients with advanced cancer die of progressive malnutrition. In this article, Dr Falke reviews the postulated causes of malnutrition in cancer patients and considers both the benefits and the limitations of using nutritional therapy, including its role in the terminal phase of illness
