Ruling out neoplasia a diagnostic priority

Although benign in and of themselves, many common diseases of the uterine cervix are precursors of neoplasia. Thus, their prompt, accurate diagnosis, with special attention paid to excluding malignancy, is essential. In this article, Drs Selim and Shalodi assert that cytology alone is not equal to the task. Only when it is supplemented with colposcopy and, in particular, colposcopically directed biopsy can diagnostic reliability be assured.
