Low back pain is an extremely common complaint in the United States. Current estimates indicate that 13 million people are either totally or partially disabled because of such pain. For the majority of these people the etiology of their pain remains uncertain even after a thorough workup. Drs Wallace and Solove report on their experience using epidural steroid nerve blocks as a first-line form of invasive therapy for chronic low back pain. They have found this type of treatment to be not only successful but also nearly risk-free.
