To the title's question, Dr Kottke answers an emphatic and succinct: Everybody. He argues that primary care physicians can be more successful in preventing coronary heart disease in their practice by reducing risk factor levels a bit in every patient than by trying to reduce these levels a lot in high-risk patients. This article not only encourages physician intervention but also offers tools for helping patients control the three major modifiable risk factors for coronary heart disease: hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and smoking.
