How to manage patient death and care for the bereaved

A physician's responsibility to care for a patient and his or her family does not end at the moment of death. A family's grief can be lessened by paying attention to their needs from the time of notification of death throughout the bereavement process. The authors present guidelines for the management of patient death and family grief in two different situations: when the death is expected and when it is not.
