Muscle weakness is associated with many diseases, but when its onset is in adulthood, the potential causes can be narrowed to a few. Dr Riggs discusses assessment of muscle weakness and examines the four most common neuromuscular diseases of adulthood, which, although not common, may well be encountered by the primary care physician.
