Abstract

As American settlers moved westward in the 1800s, they had to depend on their own resources to meet most of their needs. When no doctor was available to provide medical help, people could use common plants and household products to treat injuries and disease-especially if they owned a copy of one of Dr Gunn's medical books. In its pages, a family could find remedies for medical problems that ranged from gonorrhea to gunshot wounds.
