Diesel-powered vehicles emit relatively large quantities of carbonaceous particles of respirable size. The particles contain adsorbed hydrocarbon compounds that are mutagenic in bacterial assays. Can diesel exhaust emissions cause respiratory disease, including cancer? Dr McClellan and associates address this issue as a case study in current concepts in inhalation toxicology and risk assessment.
