Treating obesity in young persons is a delicate and frustrating task because of the many individual variables in energy use and the changes produced by growth and maturation during this period of life. A clear origin for the problem remains unknown. Dr Paige summarizes the current thinking on obesity, its effects and hazards, and recommends a safe, supervised behavior modification program to ensure that nutritional needs are met during dieting.
