The hundreds of diet programs that are currently available come in a variety of types: balanced, high-carbohydrate, low- carbohydrate, high-protein, low-protein, high-fat, and low-fat and combinations of these. Primary care physicians need to be aware of how these diets may affect their patients' health. In this article, Dr Friedman describes popular diets that represent several of these categories and discusses their benefits and hazards.
