Necrosis of the skin is a rare and incompletely understood complication of warfarin therapy. Investigators have suggested that congenital or acquired deficiency in protein C may create predisposing conditions. The authors report that three of their four patients with this complication also had metastatic adenocarcinoma, and they speculate that warfarin-induced skin necrosis might be a clue to the presence of occult cancer.
