Although many heavy smokers have chronic bronchitis, the condition includes more than the typical smoker's cough. Treatment should be individualized on the basis of accompanying factors, such as alcoholism or infection with a resistant organism, and the patient's response to a particular agent. The author describes the workup necessary for differential diagnosis and discusses various treatment programs.
