Prevention and early detection are the keys to improved survival for persons with colorectal cancer. Researchers are investigating environmental factors that may initiate or promote malignant changes in the colon, and a number of screening techniques are now available to aid early detection of the disease. The authors provide the latest information about these issues and discuss how the primary care physician's participation is vital to the development and maintenance of adequate screening programs.
