Careful examination of the skin may provide clues to the presence of an underlying disorder, in particular, internal malignant disease. Occasionally, the first evidence of such malignancy is the appearance of one or more skin lesions. These lesions may represent cutaneous metastases of the primary tumor or may be one of many distinct dermatoses known to be associated with occult cancer.
