Between 300 and 600 persons die each year in the United States in lightning accidents. Several thousand more are struck but survive, and up to 75% of these survivors have some permanent sequelae. The author addresses the types of lightning injuries, the pathophysiology involved, and the recommended approach to prevention and treatment.
