Rheumatic fever diagnosis has been problematic; correlation of actual symptoms with published criteria may be difficult. Drs Tadzynski and Ryan discuss the updated Jones criteria for reliable diagnosis of acute rheumatic fever, give specific guidelines for differentiating rheumatic fever from other diseases with similar symptoms, and alert the primary care physician to common diagnostic pitfalls.
