Corticosteroids have been in use for a variety of conditions for a number of years. In this two-part article, Dr Jamieson examines the agents and their use in treatment of the rheumatic diseases. Part 1 concentrates on the mechanisms of steroid action, considerations in dosing, and the various treatment regimens and their indications. Part 2, which begins on page 247, addresses the use of steroids in specific rheumatic disease states, as well as the agents' effect on bone.
