Mammography has been shown to detect unsuspected breast cancers in formal breast cancer screening programs. In this article, the authors report their experience in doing biopsies of areas of mammographic abnormality in 598 women from a community without a formal screening program. Over a seven- year period, 107 nonpalpable breast cancers were found using a needle-localization biopsy technique. The results of their experience reinforce the recommendation that mammography be used in periodic screening of asymptomatic women to help ensure early detection of breast cancers and, consequently, a better prognosis.
