Many techniques and drugs for resuscitation are controversial. Do the risks of the esophageal obturator airway outweigh the advantages? Does the new cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), with its techniques to change intrathoracic and intraab-dominal pressures, represent an improvement over standard CPR? Does use of the antishock garment in CPR increase survival rates? Dr Hankins makes some interesting observations on these resuscitation techniques and discusses pharmacologic intervention with calcium, calcium channel blockers, and naloxone in cardiac arrest situations.
