Learning disabilities can be devastating to a child or adolescent, interfering with school and all aspects of psychosocial growth and development and causing frustration not only for the child but for the parents and teachers, too. Dr Silver describes the physician's role in a multidisciplinary effort to understand the total child and to prevent a developmental disability from becoming a major, lifelong handicap.
