Disasters

Role of the non—emergency physician

Pages 115-118 | Published online: 16 May 2016

Abstract

When disaster strikes a community, a number of unpredictable factors come into play. Careful advance planning by hospitals can help in dealing with the unexpected and in creating structure out of chaos. Although every accredited hospital has a disaster plan, probably not all staff members are familiar with the plan or their role in it. This article challenges the non-emergency physician to become aware of who is in charge and who is responsible for which in a disaster.
