Physicians are seeing more patients who are part of a single-parent family and are being asked more frequently to treat problems that relate, directly or indirectly, to that life-style. Dr Anstett and Ms Lewis discuss the stress created by separation, through death or divorce, for both children and adults and the physical and emotional manifestations this stress can cause. Common crises experienced by single-parent families are listed along with appropriate therapeutic actions for the physician to consider. To achieve some understanding of the single parent's situation, physicians are encouraged to read about the problem. The reading list that is provided should be helpful to family members as well as medical personnel.
