Meningitis, although relatively common, is a serious infection often accompanied by major sequelae. Since suspicion is the most important part of diagnosis, the authors stress the diagnostic clues that call for prompt action, through either treatment or referral. They also recommend effective regimens for treatment and prophylaxis of meningitis, including several third- generation cephalosporins that have become available only recently.
