The virus HTLV-III, which is the cause of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and its precursors, is currently of great concern to researchers, physicians, and patients. As the virus spreads, patients with prodromes of AIDS are likely to seek care from their primary care physician in increasing numbers. Dr Pien discusses what is known to date about the virus and its management and examines the special needs of affected patients in terms of emotional support and appropriate referral for subspecialty care.
