When to repair, when to refer

Hand injuries can often be treated in the primary care physician's office or in the emergency department, but only after careful examination has determined that referral is not necessary or can be delayed. In this article, Drs Sturm and Cicero describe the examination of the injured hand, discuss emergency treatment of minor injuries, and suggest which injuries require referral to a specialist.
