Decades of clinical research on non—small cell lung cancer have shown that systemic therapy has little impact on the disease's inevitably fatal course. Use of a single cytotoxic drug is not effective in most cases; combination chemotherapy may be palliative for 40% to 50% of selected patients. Dr Lyss suggests a framework for interpreting the literature against the realities of the patient's condition.
