Vaginal discharge can be nothing more than a physiologic response to the influence of estrogen, or it can be the sign of serious infection or sexually transmitted disease. Thus, the primary care physician, who is often called on to treat this complaint, must be able to ascertain the specific cause if she or he is to effect a lasting cure.
