As many as 20% of patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome have neurologic illness as the presenting manifestation. Often a neurologic disorder occurs before clinical evidence of immunodeficiency is apparent Dr Berger details the signs and symptoms of several categories of neurologic disease—meningitis, encephalitis, myelopathy, and peripheral neuropathy—and suggests tests that may be helpful in diagnosis.
